Tummy Tuck Myth vs. Fact

The tummy tuck is one of the most popular body contouring procedure available. That being said, there are still a variety of misconceptions about the procedure, who is a good candidate, and what it can do for our patients. Let’s go over some of the most prevalent tummy tuck myths and debunk them with facts and science behind the procedure.

MYTH: Tummy tucks help you lose weight…

FACT: While a tummy tuck can help you fit into a smaller pair of pants, it will not help you lose weight. A tummy tuck is a surgical cosmetic procedure that reduces the amount of excess skin around the midsection while strengthening the abdominal muscles underneath. Because patients are removing a large amount of lose skin from their midsection, their waist can appear smaller and the number on the scale can go down. However, a tummy tuck is not and should not be considered a weight-loss procedure. We encourage all of our patients to lead a healthy and active lifestyle in order to maintain their tummy tuck results.

MYTH: Tummy tucks are only for women…

FACT: Tummy tucks are not only for women! While the tummy tuck is typically associated with women who have had children, it is also a very popular procedure among men who have lost a significant amount of weight. Because the tummy tuck gets rid of the skin around the midsection and supports the abdominal muscles, men can benefit from a tummy tuck just as much as women.

MYTH: Tummy tucks and liposuction do the same things…

FACT: While a tummy tuck and liposuction are often performed together, each individual procedure does not provide patients with similar results. While a tummy tuck reduces excess skin, liposuction reduces excess fat. In receiving these procedures together, they work hand-in-hand to provide patients with the sleek, slim results they want.

MYTH: I’m too old for a tummy tuck…

FACT: There’s a common misconception that women can only benefit from a tummy tuck if they’re younger. In reality, women in their fifties and sixties can benefit just as much from a tummy tuck as a woman in her twenties or thirties. The only qualifications we have to receive a tummy tuck is that patients are in good general health and are within 15lbs of their ideal weight.

MYTH: It’s not safe to get pregnant after a tummy tuck…

FACT: It’s often not recommended for a woman to receive a tummy tuck if she’s not done having children. This is not because it’s dangerous for the baby or mother, but because the results of the tummy tuck will be reversed in the even the patient gets pregnant after their procedure. If you do happen to get pregnant following your tummy tuck procedure, rest assured you and your baby will be perfectly safe and healthy.
